Molding & Casting Process
To mold the original plasticene sculptures, shims were first constructed around the figure and tubes were inserted in the highpoints as vents and pouring spouts.
Liquid urethane rubber was poured into the shimmed area and filled to form the first half of the mold. The process was repeated to construct the second half of the mold. Each sculpture was molded in two halves to create a two-part block mold with vents and a pouring spout.
Once the original sculpture was removed from the cured rubber mold, the interior of the mold halves were coated with a release agent and bound together. A liquid urethane casting resin was then poured into the spout with a funnel and allowed to cure. After curing, the two halves of the mold were seperated and the solid resin casting could be removed.
The process was repeated for each figure and a total number of 120 Can Tahs were cast in resin.
